What is included in an electric guitar set-up?
A good set-up is about how the whole instrument works together. SR Guitars checks the guitar’s playability and adjusts the parts that affect how it feels and stays in tune. Depending on the job, this can include string replacement, action adjustment, intonation and checks around the bridge or tremolo system.
The set-up is tailored to the instrument, string gauge and the way you like to play rather than forcing every guitar into one specification.
Action and intonation adjustments
If the strings feel unnecessarily high, or the guitar plays sharp or flat as you move up the neck, action and intonation may need attention. SR Guitars offers action-only, intonation-only and combined action-and-intonation adjustments.
- Action adjustment only — £20
- Intonation adjustment only — £20
- Action + intonation — £30
Floyd Rose and floating tremolo set-ups
Floating tremolo systems need string tension and spring tension to balance correctly. A change of string gauge or tuning can upset that balance. The dedicated Floyd Rose / floating tremolo set-up is £55 plus strings.
Restringing and string choice
Standard restringing is £15 plus strings, or £20 plus strings with a fretboard clean. SR Guitars supplies Elixir strings in the customer’s requested gauge. Brian May Red Special guitars are supplied with Optima Gold plated strings in the requested gauge.
When should you book a set-up?
A set-up is worth considering when the guitar feels harder to play than it should, intonation is noticeably out, the action has changed, you are changing string gauge or tuning, or a floating bridge no longer sits correctly.
